The American professor appreciated the work of Jaljeon Mission.
The Nobel laureate said – the mission was successful in saving children’s lives.
The Mission’s initiative in preventing diseases like diarrhea is commendable.

New Delhi. Nobel laureate Michael Kramer in one of his papers praised India’s Jal Jeevan Mission and said that this mission will save the lives of 1.36 lakh children under 5 years of age every year. Prof. Michael Cramer is an American economist who was jointly awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize in Economics with Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo for their pioneering work on global poverty alleviation. Pro-Kramer said a key finding from his study was that infant mortality could be reduced by about 30 percent if families were provided with clean drinking water.

Prof. Michael Kramer said that diarrhea is a common disease, especially among newborns. Newborn babies are more prone to waterborne diseases. A survey conducted during his research concluded that one in four child deaths could be prevented by providing clean water. In such a case, the ‘Har Ghar Jal’ program plays an important role in improving the quality of health, especially among children. Pro Kramer is happy to know that the Jal Jeevan Mission is not only providing water to rural households but also ensuring that the water supplied is of prescribed quality. In this regard, water sources and endpoints were regularly checked by water testing labs using Field Test Kits (FTKs) and community monitoring.

If clean and safe water is available, the mortality rate of children will decrease.

Pro Kramer assured future cooperation to study the impact of safe water storage, new and less expensive water treatment technologies and the availability of tap water in villages. In 2019, at the time of Jal Jeevan Mission’s launch, more than 50% of the population did not have safe access. In some parts of India water is polluted due to high levels of arsenic, fluoride and nitrate. A clean and safe water campaign was launched to save people, especially small children, in this area. The survey revealed that if clean and safe water is available, we will be able to reduce the child mortality rate.
