New Delhi. The Andhra Pradesh government has sanctioned an amount of Rs 1 crore for the treatment of a girl suffering from a rare genetic disease, Gaucher disease. Its treatment requires a total of 52 injections, administered once every 15 days. While the cost of each injection is Rs 1.25 lakh. Gaucher is a genetic disease commonly found in Jewish people of Eastern and Central European descent. Its symptoms can appear at any age.

Gaucher disease occurs in people whose parents have developed a particular inheritance pattern, called autosomal recessive. Gaucher disease occurs in a child only if both parents carry the Gaucher gene. In Gaucher disease, certain fatty substances build up in certain parts of the body, especially the spleen and liver. Due to this, these organs become enlarged and their functioning is disrupted. These fatty substances can also accumulate in bone tissue. This can weaken the bone and increase the risk of fracture.

If the bone marrow is affected, it can reduce the blood’s ability to clot. Enzyme replacement therapy is often used to treat it. Gaucher causes anemia in patients, which can lead to severe fatigue. Sometimes Gaucher disease also affects the brain. It causes muscle stiffness and difficulty swallowing. Gaucher disease can also cause seizures. A rare form of Gaucher disease begins in childhood. In which the patient usually dies at the age of 2 years.
