Apple iPad users with cellular service will no longer be able to use an Apple SIM.
Apple iPad users with cellular service must now obtain an e-SIM or physical SIM.
However, those using a physical SIM on their iPad will not be affected.

New Delhi. Apple iPad users with cellular service will no longer be able to activate a data plan for their tablet. Now they have to use e-SIM or new physical SIM card for data plan. In fact, Apple iPad users with cellular service can no longer use an Apple SIM with their device. MacRumors reports that Apple has quietly updated the Cellular Data Support page, clearly mentioning that activation support will no longer be available using both standard and embedded Apple SIMs.

However, those using a physical SIM on their iPad will not be affected by this change. However, from October 1, the embedded Apple SIM will not be able to be used at all, the report said. An update on the Apple Support page states that Apple SIM technology will no longer be available to activate the new cellular data plan on the iPad.

An Apple SIM is an embedded SIM.
Introduced in 2014, the Apple SIM is an embedded physical SIM that can be configured with a profile from any telecom service provider and used with the iPad without having to purchase a new SIM from service providers for cellular services.

eSIM support in iPad
In some regions, Apple also included SIMs with cellular versions of the iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 3, iPad Mini 4, fifth- and sixth-generation iPads, and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. However, the company later started adding SIM-embedded versions to the 9.7-inch, 10.5-inch and second-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro models. All iPads launched after these models come with eSIM support.

Users can contact service providers.
Apple says that if you’re affected by this change, you can contact your service provider for more information about connecting iPad to a cellular data plan. Meanwhile, users have the option to use a SIM card and use it with their older generation iPad. New iPad users also have the option of using an eSIM for data service.

Why did Apple stop SIM activation?
Apple has not given any exact reason behind this move. However, this seems to be a step towards eSIM support. Now, every iPad model launched after 2018 supports eSIM and now users have the option to use eSIM on their iPads for data connectivity. This means that there is no longer the need for an Apple SIM and a new activation using the SIM.
