Amid reports of an alleged fight between the two largest parties of the ruling grand alliance in Bihar, the JDU and the RJD, now even smaller sections of the alliance have stepped up their demand for an early formation of the coordination committee. The road to the less than two-month-old alliance formed after the BJP wrested power from the state is starting to look rocky. Speculations of resentment between the two major parties were fueled by the fact that RJD state chief Jagdanand Singh made it clear that Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav would replace his boss Nitish Kumar next year. A few days later, Jagdananda Singh’s son Sudhakar Singh had to resign from the post of Agriculture Minister. Sudhakar was constantly putting his own government in the dock.

However, Tejashwi Yadav, on his part, tried to play down the situation by saying that he was “in no rush” to occupy the top post. At the same time, he asked Jagdananda Singh to issue a circular that the RJD workers would not make any statement that would make the new alliance difficult.

Left parties have demanded Tej’s coordination committee.
Amid speculations that the RJD and JD(U) are at loggerheads, smaller allies of the grand alliance, and especially the Left, feel it’s time to form a ‘coordination committee’, the absence of which is often The reason for the termination is given. The NDA government is responsible in the state.

CPI (ML) Legislature Party leader Mehboob Alam said he met Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav soon after Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Sudhakar Singh resigned as minister. We felt that the government was doing a good job and things like Singh’s behavior were having a bad impact. In such a situation, he urged them to immediately form a coordination committee and prepare a joint minimum programme.

Our aim was to remove such misunderstandings, the need of which has only increased, said Alam. He claimed that Tejashwi Yadav listened to him patiently and assured me that the committee would be formed soon. “They asked me to come up with the names of representatives whom my party would like to be part of the coordination committee,” said Alam. I am sure they are also in touch with other alliance partners and we will see some progress.

The support of JDU-RJD is essential for a grand coalition government.
Bihar’s ruling Grand Alliance comprises seven parties – Janata Dal (U), RJD, Congress, CPI (ML), CPI, CPI (M) and Indian People’s Front. The alliance has more than 160 MLAs in the 243-member Bihar Assembly. Among them, 12 MLAs are from CPI (ML).

All the allies of this grand alliance know that JD(U) and RJD must stay together for the survival of their government. Both these parties have 124 MLAs, two more than the magic number in the 243-member assembly.

‘The opposition should not get a chance to beat the drum’
It is for this reason that other alliance partners also share this view of the CPI (ML). CPI national secretary Atul Anjan said that his party has been in favor of setting up a coordination committee since the beginning. Atul Anjan said, ‘Our leaders Ram Naresh Pandey, Kedar Pandey and Bihar Legislative Council member Sanjay Singh met the Chief Minister after the formation of the government and made this proposal.’

“Recent developments demand that we have a coordination committee. The Chief Minister was not against the idea. It is much needed now, as two assembly constituencies, Mokama and Gopalganj, are holding by-elections. These by-elections are multi-party. It will be an opportunity for the alliance to express its solidarity.

On Sudhakar Singh’s resignation, Anjan said that people like him should not have aspired to the post of minister. Pointing to Sudhakar Singh, he said, ‘He should not insult the government. The opposition should not be given a chance to beat the drum.

Congress’s Bihar in-charge Bhakta Charandas, whose party is the third-largest ally of the Grand Alliance, seems reluctant to comment on the recent turmoil, though he agrees on the need for a coordination committee. He said that discussions have been held regarding the formation of the coordination committee. It will come into effect as soon as possible.
